| Metz & Associates Encourages Healthier Lifestyles By Utilizing Trans Fat-Free Oil in Fried Food Preparation |
| FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE |
Contact: Ruth Corcoran “We are making this important change with the health of our customers in mind,” Leininger said. “Evidence shows that consumption of trans fat raises cholesterol levels, which increases the risk of coronary disease and can also cause obesity. This is a big concern for adults as well as the school children we serve. It is our goal to help them develop healthy eating habits early to avoid the risks associated with high cholesterol and obesity.” Trans fats are artificial fats made when hydrogen reacts with oil. Many manufacturers started including trans fats in their processed foods about twenty years ago to prolong their products’ shelf life. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) required that food manufacturers begin listing trans fat (trans fatty acids) on Nutritional Facts and some Supplemental Facts panels on January 1, 2006. By adding trans fat on the Nutrition Facts panel, consumers now know for the first time how much of all three - saturated fat, trans fat and cholesterol - are in the foods they choose. Identifying trans fat on the food label gives consumers additional information with which to make heart-healthy food choices.
