October 13, 2009 –Metz & Associates, Ltd. recently took another step towards supporting the company’s green initiatives with the introduction of the “ReNew” program at several accounts. ReNew is a collection of environmentally friendly reusable food containers made of sturdy polypropylene that have been designed to use over and over again, rather than being disposed of after only one use. A resin used in the making of the containers, polycarbonate, is widely used due to its excellent properties of durability, clarity and stain resistance.

“These special eco-takeouts reduce non-biodegradable waste and keep our landfills cleaner,” said Mark Carone, district manager, Metz &Associates, Ltd. “They are microwave safe, dishwasher safe, and break resistant, making them ideal for use anywhere food is served to go.”

A Metz dining customer can purchase the container at a cost of $4.00 and then return the soiled container for a clean one to be used for their next food purchase. The returned containers are dishwasher sanitized and re-used. Metz has marketed the program to customers through the use of table tents, signage, banners and also a descriptive flyer.

“To encourage use of the new containers, we’ve also offered customers a 20% discount on the purchase of their first container,” Carone said. “We’ve found that the customers who have purchased the containers feel great about the fact that they are doing their part to reduce landfill waste, protect the ozone layer and protect the environment for the next generation.”

Metz launched the ReNew program at the beginning of September at Gateway Center in Pittsburgh, PA and Gannon University in Erie, PA. The program has met with so much success that it will be expanded this month to include Developers Diversified Realty, The J.M. Smucker Company, Erie Insurance, Lake Erie College, the University of Pittsburgh Titusville and Bradford campuses and Pittsburgh Technical Institute.

“Our goal with this program, as with our other green initiatives, is to be sustainable and protect our resources for future generations,” Carone said. “We continue to identify and focus on practical means to be sustainable, from pre-consumer and post-consumer waste reduction to local purchasing, composting, farm-to-table initiatives and more. We also partner with our many educational accounts to educate students on nutrition and making the right choice, for both their health and the health of the environment.”
