DALLAS, PA – December 5, 2008 -Upper classmen and graduate students in the Dietetic Internship Program and the Food & Nutrition Program at Marywood University recently had the opportunity to put their knowledge to the test with a hands-on assignment provided by Metz & Associates, Ltd. Students in the two programs prepared a variety of nutritional presentations, which were then presented at local Metz accounts, including Blue Cross of Northeastern Pennsylvania, Mercy Hospital in Scranton, Misericordia University and Holy Redeemer High School.

“This opportunity provided by Metz & Associates, Ltd. perfectly complemented our community nutrition lecture course. It allowed our students to put their book knowledge into practice,” said Denice Ferko-Adams, MPH, RD, LDN, adjunct professor at Marywood University. “The students were extremely pleased to have the opportunity to work in this type of environment, where they were teamed with an experienced chef to develop recipes and programs to be presented to their various audiences.”

The groups presenting at Misericordia covered several topics of interest to the students at the University, including an overview of good carbs versus bad carbs and how not eating after 5pm can help students maintain a healthy weight. At Mercy Hospital in Scranton students presented “Color Your Diet with Fruits & Vegetables,” and at Holy Redeemer, the Marywood group focused on educating the students on healthy snacking options.

The presentations at Blue Cross were geared to the interests of the staff and held during staff lunch breaks. One of the topics presented was “What Can High Calcium Food Do For You?” while another discussed cooking healthy meals in a crock-pot. “The student demonstrations were very positive and highly informative, said Nello Alleggrucci, general manager & executive chef, Metz & Associates, Ltd. at Blue Cross. “The employees of Blue Cross found the programs to be very interesting and they enjoyed sampling the foods prepared in conjunction with each presentation. They also took home various recipes and information on healthy eating.”

“We were pleased to be able to provide these students with this important opportunity,” said Kathy Gonzalez, Vice President of Nutrition Education Services, Metz & Associates, Ltd. and board member of the Marywood University Dietary Program. “Our goal was to provide an experience that would enable the students to become more comfortable doing presentations, as well as educating them on the entire process - from research to planning and finally implementing their plan.”
